HumanDT
Safe, Sustainable and Human-Centric design and implementation of Digital Twin technology to improve occupational health and safety in new Industry 5.0 manufacturing processes and workplaces
The increasing complexity of industrial systems and the integration of digital technologies create new challenges for understanding and managing human factors in safety-critical operations. Traditional approaches often fail to capture the dynamic interactions between humans, machines and organisational processes. Digital twins offer new opportunities to model and analyse these interactions, but their application to human-centred safety management remains limited. HumanDT addresses this gap by developing human-centred digital twin approaches to support safety analysis, training and decision-making in industrial contexts.
The project investigates how human behaviour, cognitive workload and organisational factors can be represented within digital twin models. It explores how human-centred digital twins can support safety analysis, training and operational decision-making. The project examines validation methods, data requirements and ethical considerations related to human data. Additional questions address usability, acceptance and integration into existing safety management practices.
HumanDT will deliver a human-centred digital twin framework supporting safety analysis and decision-making. The project will develop models, methods and demonstrators illustrating the integration of human factors into digital twins. Outputs include validated use cases, methodological guidelines and recommendations for applying digital twins to human-centred safety management.
The project is structured into five interlinked work packages. - WP1 – Project management and coordination: ensures governance, reporting, quality assurance and dissemination activities. - WP2 – Human factors modelling: develops models capturing human behaviour, cognitive workload and organisational factors. - WP3 – Digital twin development: integrates human-factor models into digital twin environments for safety analysis. - WP4 – Validation and use cases: applies and validates the human-centred digital twin approach in representative scenarios. - WP5 – Dissemination and exploitation: supports knowledge transfer and uptake in industrial safety management practices.
