SMARTSAFE
Safety Management and Analysis using Real-time Text-based System for Anomaly Forecasting and Evaluation
Digitalisation and real-time data collection are increasingly used to improve safety management in industrial environments, yet many organisations still rely on fragmented information sources and reactive approaches to risk management. The lack of integrated systems combining real-time monitoring, data analytics and decision support limits the ability to anticipate hazardous situations and prevent accidents. Workers and safety managers often face information overload without actionable insights, while existing tools rarely adapt to dynamic operational conditions. SMARTSAFE addresses these challenges by developing an integrated approach to safety management based on real-time data, advanced analytics and intelligent decision support to improve occupational safety outcomes.
The project investigates how real-time sensor data and operational information can be integrated into a coherent safety management system. It examines which indicators are most relevant for early detection of hazardous situations and how data analytics can support proactive risk management. The project explores how intelligent decision-support tools can improve situational awareness for workers and safety managers. Additional research questions address system validation, user acceptance and alignment with existing safety management standards.
SMARTSAFE will deliver an integrated safety management framework combining real-time monitoring, data analytics and decision support. The project will develop and validate tools for early hazard detection and proactive risk mitigation in industrial environments. Outputs include demonstrators, validated indicators, technical guidelines and recommendations supporting the deployment of data-driven safety management solutions in practice.
The project is implemented through five coordinated work packages. - WP1 – Project management and coordination: ensures overall scientific coordination, quality control, reporting and risk management. - WP2 – Data acquisition and system architecture: designs the data collection framework and integrates heterogeneous safety-related data sources. - WP3 – Analytics and decision support: develops and validates data analytics and intelligent decision-support tools for proactive risk management. - WP4 – Validation and demonstration: tests and validates the system in representative industrial operational scenarios. - WP5 – Dissemination and exploitation: supports communication, uptake and alignment with existing safety management standards.
